Sunday drive with an atlas
by Austina Reed, PhD
It’s an easy drive of exactly 101 miles, the two-lane U.S. Highway 24 from Kentland to Lagro, Indiana. A relatively straight and flat road, a change-of-scenery happens every 10 miles or so with another outpost. Twelve townships, towns and cities; the math works every time; two hours across, west to east.
It’s not advantageous to rush the journey; to do so misses the entire point of what used to be known as the Sunday drive. Hoosiers along this stretch of highway still do Sunday drives really well. It’s worth adopting the style because, while it may not be fashionable to ditch the digital cockpit and all its “smart infotainment systems,” being a Sunday driver does wonders for the psyche.
