We write feature stories because other people’s know-how intrigues us; their cleverness, wit, and decisiveness; their stewardship. In their totality, these characteristics shape what it means to be intellectual. We explore the circumstances by which greatness happens; the how of succeeding in the rural landscape of U.S. Route 24.

 

This digital space is created to inspire the imagination. Being curious is a human condition. Curiosity serves our desire to be intellectual. It satisfies our need for purposefulness. Curiosity is the basis of relationship-building; it is life-affirming. Upstream takes us to the source of it all.

 

Our stories offer a refreshing way to look at small towns, rural communities, the midwestern culture, highway routes. They are told through the individual’s voice. What we aspire to produce with this publication is a testament to individuality. In understanding the heart of individuality, we discover the community’s pulse.

 

Long-form journalism allows us to take the time to get to know another’s becoming. Interviewing is a skill; it is also a privilege earned by trust. Research underpins every story; it complements the interview. Together, the interview and the research provide the context for understanding how individual growth and community vitality happen. 

 

Our masthead features words in pale cyan and blush using cursive fonts. Cursive is time-tested, a harbinger of critical thinking.
